Ground System Architectures Workshop
February 25-27, 1998
The Aerospace Corporation
El Segundo, California

GSAW 98: Agenda and Presentations

The second Ground System Architectures Workshop (GSAW 98) brings together users, developers, and researchers for two and one-half days of discussion and work on issues pertaining to software architectures for Spacecraft Ground Systems (SGSs). The workshop is being hosted by The Aerospace Corporation, in cooperation with the U.S. Air Force Space and Missile Systems Center (SMC) Ground Systems Integrated Product Team (GSIPT). This workshop is a part of joint government, contractor, and vendor efforts to achieve consensus on topics related to SGS architectures.

The workshop builds on the success of the first in the series, GSAW97, which was held in February 1997. GSAW 97 focused on the following issues:

  • Role of software architecture in programs - impact on interoperability and standardization
  • Approaches for representing software architectures for SGSs
  • Implementation of SGS components/systems from architectures or frameworks
  • Software technologies for support of architecture (e.g., object-oriented technologies, middleware)
  • Mapping commercial products to reference software architectures
GSAW 98  will focus on issues relating to architectures for SGSs. Participants will exchange information and discuss issues with the objective of developing a consensus on the following topics:
  • Impact of software architecture on system interoperability
  • Product lines / reference architectures for SGSs
  • Architecture evaluation methodologies and criteria
  • Space/ground architecture tradeoffs
  • Architectural issues of COTS and legacy software integration
  • Architectural implications of common operator interfaces
Working groups will be formed to address the above focus topics.

These workshops are partially supported by the University of Southern California - Center for Software Engineering and the Evolutionary Design of Complex Software (EDCS) program which is co-sponsored by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and USAF Research Lab - Information Directorate. EDCS is a technology program which addresses the need for military systems to evolve over extended lifetimes, primarily through changes in their software. Technologies that are being developed as part of this program will be applied to software in the SGS domain via these workshops and related activities.

WORKSHOP DATES: February 25-27, 1998

Workshop will be held at The Aerospace Corporation facilities in El Segundo, California.
